Change
Okay… this topic has been the talk of town for, I don’t know,
decades….? Seriously, this topic will one day be forged in the hall of legends,
where onlookers will regret the day that they let their mother planet be
reduced to this rag-tag, near death state.
We humans are the apex population of this planet. In terms of
the food chain, we might even be the compared to Hercules. But in consideration
to the state we’ve converted our planet to… I’m not as sure whether this is
going to be beneficial or not. But there is one thing I am 100% sure of: we are
destroying our planet… bit by bit. We are the origin of innumerable amounts of
problems, for example; deforestation, ozone layer depletion, you name it, you
got it. No one’s got as vicious a talent for mass environmental devastation as
mankind.
So, what can be done to prevent this apocalyptic dilemma? Well,
there are many intermediates by which the mammoth-like task of conserving the
environment can be achieved. First, we can practice reforestation.
Reforestation means replanting of trees in areas where deforestation has
already occurred. Reforestation has multiple benefits. First, it plays a
significant role in reducing the carbon footprint of that area. Second, it also
reduces possibilities of floods. Third, it helps in increasing global levels of
oxygen in the atmosphere. There are many other benefits, to name a few. But do
you know who will be the biggest benefactor out of all this? I guess your GK
skills would have told you the answer by now. Us. Now this is a rather ironical
situation. How can a species, who destroys the environment for its needs,
benefit from its restoration? The answer is quite simple: life. Every single
life form, before and now, has its origin from nature. There’s a reason why we
call nature ‘Mother’. It provides us with all the necessary conditions for
sustaining life. We had maintained a mutual relationship with nature.
This relationship laid the roots for the development of humans. But
things go on as they are, then the relationship, already strained to the width
of a string, will be strained to the point of no return. So, we need to
conserve our environment.
But… there is one more villain left to combat. This monstrosity
goes by the identification of ‘global warming’. What makes this issue
idiosyncratic is the fact that it’s a global phenomenon. While other issues are
confined to some regions and affect mostly that particular area, this ecological
disaster spreads from latitude to latitude. What do you expect air to do? After
all, air is ever-changing. Global warming has many adverse effects. Ice caps
are melting, the layer of permafrost is decreasing by the hour, carbon dioxide
concentration in the air is increasing. There are many more such repercussions
of our recklessness. In fact, our futility at controlling the emission of the
greenhouse gases has put us in such a precarious situation.
I just hope that realize our mistake and work our way towards convalescence
and to become good stewards of the planet.
Rohit: well written Palash..keep it up.
